About Takesada Shoten

Our StrengthsPhilosophyHistoryCompany Info

We guarantee the quality of our bamboo, sustainably cultivated with care in our bamboo groves of Kyoto.

Each bamboo stalk is carefully selected and utilized for its unique characteristics, ensuring the best match for every project.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we provide our bamboo sawdust to farmers as a natural soil conditioner. Bamboo offcuts from processing are repurposed as fuel, and the resulting ash is recycled into nutrient-rich fertilizer for our bamboo groves.

Our team of artisans, deeply knowledgeable about bamboo, creates a variety of bamboo products with meticulous attention.

We engage in a thoughtful dialogue with each piece of bamboo, bringing out its finest qualities to achieve exceptional results.

Our skilled craftsmen utilize an extensive range of machinery as an extension of their own hands, enabling highly precise and efficient bamboo processing.

We own various machines for different processing purposes. Especially in flat-split processing, we can achieve 0.1 millimeter-level precision.

By managing every step of the process—from bamboo cultivation and processing to sales—entirely in-house, we ensure high-quality bamboo products at competitive prices.

With a dedicated focus on craftsmanship, we maintain minimal sales and distribution costs. By tailoring proposals to fit budgets and specific conditions, we ensure the creation of project results that meet all expectations.

We welcome anyone to approach bamboo, regardless of experience or location.

For those new to bamboo, we provide a welcoming and supportive consultation process. We take the time to explore ideas with our clients, working hand-in-hand to bring their vision to life and create something truly unique and meaningful together.

Our growing clientele spans from Kyoto to across Japan, and we are excited to be expanding our reach to other continents, bringing our expertise to an even wider audience.

We offer consultations in Japanese, English, French, and German.

By combining the skills of Takesada Shoten with the ideas of creators, we continuously explore new possibilities for bamboo.

At Takesada Shoten, we blend our craftsmanship with the innovative ideas of creators to constantly explore new horizons for bamboo. We are committed to unlocking the untapped potential of this remarkable material through fresh, exciting projects.

Since ancient times, the Japanese have shared a deep connection with bamboo. Integral to traditional Japanese homes, everyday items, tea ceremonies, and gardens, bamboo holds a cherished place in Japanese culture.

Its unique blend of flexibility, strength, delicacy, and smoothness allows skilled artisans to transform bamboo into an array of captivating products. Each piece, a natural creation, varies in appearance and presents challenges such as cracking and discoloration over time.

For over 140 years, we have been captivated by bamboo’s irresistible charm. Our mission is to understand, preserve, and share this timeless allure with future generations. We are dedicated to honoring historical craftsmanship, sustaining traditional culture, and exploring bamboo’s endless possibilities.

Since its founding, Takesada Shoten has continuously evolved to meet societal changes and shifting demands, all while preserving our rich traditions. Our commitment is to remain a team of forward-thinking bamboo artisans, innovating and staying a step ahead, while honoring the timeless craftsmanship that defines us.

1877: Founded by Sadajiro Inoue, the first generation, in Uzumasa, Kyoto, specializing in bamboo cultivation and harvesting.

1920:  Tanekichi Inoue, the second generation, began producing “sakadaru” bamboo rings  for sake barrels. (In the meantime the sakadaru trade expanded nationwide and is now one of the company’s mainstay products)

1960: Manufacturing of Japanese garden and landscape products such as bamboo fences and other structural elements began in response to the US ban on sakadaru bamboo rings.

1974: Takesada Shoten Co., Ltd. was established with a capital investment of 10 million yen.

1985: Under the leadership of Shuzo Inoue, the fourth generation, we began producing interior materials and “Kyo-meichiku” (Kyoto bamboo). Facing high demand and limited availability, we seized the opportunity to enhance our capabilities by producing Kyoto bamboo in-house, ensuring quality and meeting the growing market needs.

By embracing machinery early on, we significantly increased our production capacity, ensuring a stable supply of bamboo. This innovation solidified Takesada Shoten’s reputation as a key “behind-the-scenes player” in the bamboo industry.

Today, we trade with many bamboo merchants and landscaping businesses within Kyoto Prefecture.
